Today Marks Anniversary Of Zuzu Verk Disappearance

ALPINE, TX (Ben Caxton) — A candlelight vigil and walk was held in Alpine Wednesday night for Domestic Violence Awareness in memory of Zuzu Verk. Today marks the 1 year anniversary of the Sul Ross University student’s disappearance. The walk began at the campus, continued down Sul Ross Avenue, and ended at the Brewster County Courthouse. Candles with Zuzu Rene Verk’s initials were custom made for many to remember and honor Zuzu and a moment of silence was held for all victims and survivors of domestic violence. Verk’s disappearance last October launched a massive search involving law enforcement agencies and rescue operations from around the country. Months after her disappearance, her remains were located in a shallow grave in a rural area, just outside of the city. Two men were arrested in connection with her death. Her former boyfriend Robert Fabian, and Fabian’s friend Chris Estrada. Estrada has told investigators he drove Fabian to an Alpine store the evening of October 12 and let Fabian use his credit card to buy plastic drop cloths which were used to cover the body. He has been held in the Presidio County jail since mid-February on two charges of Tampering with Evidence. Fabian is still being held on bonds totaling $925,000.
