Summer Arrives Unanimously This Fall As Valentine Mayor

VALENTINE, TX (Ben Caxton) — As fall approaches Summer arrived again earlier than expected in Valentine. Long time Valentine Mayor Chur Calderon has been expected to step down in favor of his hand-picked successor sometime in October. But at last night’s city council meeting, the council voted unanimously to appoint Calderon’s choice, Summer Webb, as the new Mayor of Jeff Davis County’s only incorporated city. Speaking with Valentine Radio News contributor Roxana Hill after the meeting, Webb said she’ll have the former mayor on speed dial as she fills out his term over the next two years. “[Roxana Hill speaks with Summer Webb]” For his part, Calderon has expressed his excitement to see Webb take over the reigns. “I’m very excited about it. I think that Summer Webb would be a good choice. Summer Webb is a pretty intelligent person. She’s got a lot of energy. She has kids in school. I think she will have an interest in Valentine. She will move forward in trying to make life better for the people of Valentine.” Webb will be the city’s third mayor since it was incorporated in 1974, following the city’s first mayor, Johnny Porras who resigned to keep his seat on the Valentine ISD school board, and Calderon, who has held the seat since 1976.
