Marfa Accident Leaves Newlywed Fighting For His Life

MARFA, TX (Ben Caxton) — 29-year-old Alberto Halpern, and his new bride, El Paso city representative-elect Alexsandra Annello, were married in Fort Davis Saturday. Annello had won the District 2 city representative race the same day. On their honeymoon in Marfa Tuesday to see the Marfa Lights a gruesome traffic accident left Alberto Halpern in the hospital, fighting for his life, with his new bride at his side. Annello and two other passengers, Courtney Repoza and Derrick Myer, were traveling in Halpern’s Nissan Xterra when another vehicle struck his sport utility vehicle on U.S. Highway 67, about eight miles from Marfa. A white Dodge Caravan driven by 42-year-old Eric Keith Payne of Midland was going the wrong way in traffic and hit Halpern’s car, according to a report from the Texas Department of Public Safety in Pecos. Payne was killed in the crash. Halpern, a senior administrative assistant for El Paso County Commissioner David Stout, sustained multiple injuries, including to his head, spine, and leg, Halpern originally was taken to Big Bend Regional Medical Center in Alpine before being flown to University Medical Center of El Paso. He remains hospitalized. His father, Robert Halpern, co-owner of the Big Bend Sentinel newspaper in Marfa, expressed appreciation for the specialized care by the trauma unit at University Medical Center, as well as the work of CEO Jacob Cintron.
