Lots Of Mud-Slinging Over Adobe Valuations In Marfa

MARFA, TX (Ben Caxton) — Monday’s meeting of the Presidio County Appraisal Board resulted in lots of mud-slinging over the value of adobe. The board has gradually added adobe constructed buildings to its list of appraised properties over the last few years. But many angry residents showed up at the meeting to protest the valuations that are being applied. Newer adobe construction which has become popular around Marfa is a hybrid, mixing traditional adobe with modern building materials and elements. Yet many traditional adobe buildings, built literally from the mud and soil of the land they are constructed on are apparently being appraised similar rates. Marfa residents are very concerned that these arbitrary valuations could force older traditional residents out of their homes and out of the area due to the high tax burden.
