MARFA (Ben Caxton) — Former long-time Marfa resident Jerry Lee Garnett passed away in Midland on Sunday. Garnett and family moved to Marfa in the 1930’s, eventually graduating from Marfa High School in 1948. He spent much of his career in the oil fields abroad from New Zealand to Somalia, with a stint in the U.S. Navy during the Korean war. But he returned to Marfa and went into business in 1980 spending much of his time serving as a volunteer firefighter. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Marfa Volunteer Fire Department. Garnett was eighty-six years old.
